Artist: Christy Johnson
Survivor Name: Abigail Johnson
Medium: Watercolor and Ink Painting, 18 x 24
Artist’s Statement: Captain is an 18 x 24, watercolor & ink image on paper. It has an intentionally noticeable frame to signify the importance of the boundaries and safety that are necessary for healing to occur. It is the heroine’s journey represented through a visual collection of resilient actions, chosen and implemented by Abigail, the survivor.
This is her path to healing: writing, journaling, listening to music, playing music, finding calm in guided meditation, reading poetry, surrounding herself with a trusted community, taking visual control of her appearance and sharing her story. It is the sharing of this wisdom that brings voice to collective healing, helping others to integrate the healing aspects of their story by offering them tools to do so is the true power. Empowerment is not only about strength; it is about awareness and being kind and forgiving toward oneself. It is allowing and noticing. It is hope.
The titles of this and it’s companion work “Masters” take inspiration from the poem “Invictus” by William Ernest Henley.
