Artist: Catherine L. Tonning
Survivor Name: Cyndi Chadwick Grieshop
Medium: Pen and Ink, 19 x 16
Artist’s Statement: I chose to create a tree in pen & ink to represent the poem “After the Storm” by Cyndi Chadwick. The tree is strong but damaged by the storm. Some of the branches are windblown and broken as they fight the turbulent assault, some even have sharp jagged edges as the storm has battered them yet they strive to hang on. Words of doubt and hurt have left their scars deep into the tree trunk but still it stands tall and strong. Even though the roots feel like they are being pulled up and torn out of the ground they dig in deeper searching for a strong hold to keep the tree up right and alive. The roots split the rocks and boulders as they reach downwards. Some of the rocks crumble, turn to dust and fall away while others are buried deep and stay put to support the tree.
“Use the community of other survivors. Know that you are not alone and that you can get through what happened to you. It is not who you are. You are strong and I believe you.” — Cyndi
